Climatic Tests

A climatic test is a test conducted to evaluate how materials, structures, or systems react to different environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, wind, rain, snow, and solar radiation. These tests are performed in various sectors, including engineering, automotive, aerospace, and construction, to ensure the resistance and reliability of products under real or extreme climatic conditions. Such tests can be carried out to:

  • guarantee product quality. The test demonstrates that the environmental specifications assigned to the product are met
  • prevent malfunctions. Tests in extreme environmental conditions highlight product weaknesses and help adopt engineering measures to improve performance and prevent failures or breakdowns
  • comply with specific product regulations or essential requirements established by product directives. Technical standards (IEC, EN, UL, etc.) define the climatic cycles that the product must undergo to verify correct functionality under simulated extreme conditions

Types of Climatic Tests

  1. Temperature Tests – Simulate environments with extremely high or low temperatures to test the resistance of materials and electronics.
  2. Humidity Tests – Verify a product’s ability to withstand high humidity or condensation.
  3. UV Exposure Tests – Simulate aging caused by sunlight.
  4. Salt Spray Tests – Assess corrosion resistance in marine or salt-rich environments.
  5. Rain and Waterproof Tests – Evaluate the waterproofing of materials and electronics.
  6. Dust Resistance Tests – Assess resistance to desert-like or dusty environments.

These tests can be conducted in climatic chambers, instruments that reproduce controlled atmospheric conditions.

Types of Temperature Tests

  1. Constant Temperature Test – The sample is exposed for a prolonged period at a fixed high or low temperature to verify stability.
  2. Thermal Shock Test – The material undergoes rapid temperature changes (e.g., from -40°C to +80°C in a few seconds) to simulate extreme thermal stress.
  3. Thermal Cycling Test – The sample alternates between high and low temperatures with slower transitions to evaluate thermal fatigue.
  4. Thermal Aging Test – Simulates prolonged exposure to high temperatures to determine product lifetime.

Humidity Tests

A humidity test evaluates the behavior of materials, electronic components, or devices when exposed to high humidity conditions. This test is essential to verify resistance to corrosion, degradation, and condensation, especially in sectors such as electronics, automotive, aerospace, and construction.

Types of Humidity Tests

  1. Constant Humidity Test – The sample is maintained in an environment with a specific humidity level (e.g., 85% RH at 60°C) for an extended period.
  2. Humidity Cycling Test – Humidity levels vary cyclically between low and high values to simulate real atmospheric conditions.
  3. Condensation Test – The sample is exposed to high humidity and then rapidly cooled, causing condensation to test water resistance.

UV Exposure Test

The UV exposure test evaluates the resistance of materials and coatings to artificial sunlight. This test is crucial to predict degradation caused by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays, which can cause discoloration, loss of mechanical properties, and surface deterioration.

  1. The sample is placed in an accelerated aging chamber
  2. UV exposure is simulated with special lamps (e.g., UVA/UVB fluorescent lamps or xenon lamps)
  3. Other factors such as temperature and humidity are controlled to reproduce real environmental conditions
  4. After a certain period (from hours to weeks), the sample is analyzed for damage

Types of UV Tests

Test with UVA-340 Lamps

  • Simulates the most damaging part of natural sunlight, used for plastics, paints, and coatings.

Test with UVB-313 Lamps

  • Provides more aggressive radiation for accelerated tests but may be harsher than real exposure.

Test with Xenon Lamps

  • Reproduces the full solar spectrum, including infrared and UV, for more realistic simulation.

Salt Spray Test

The salt spray test is an accelerated corrosion test used to evaluate the resistance of materials and protective coatings (paints, galvanization, anodization, etc.) to marine or high-salinity industrial environments. It is especially important for automotive, aerospace, construction, and naval industries.

  1. The sample is placed in a salt spray chamber;
  2. A sodium chloride solution (usually 5%) is atomized inside the chamber
  3. The test is conducted at controlled temperature (typically 35°C) for variable durations (from hours to weeks)
  4. Signs of corrosion, oxidation, or deterioration are periodically checked

Types of Salt Spray Tests

Neutral Salt Spray Test (NSS)

  • The most common, uses a neutral saline solution (pH ≈ 6.5-7.2) to assess corrosion resistance.

Acidified Salt Spray Test (CASS – Copper-Accelerated Acetic Acid Salt Spray)

  • Adds acetic acid and copper chloride to simulate more aggressive environments (e.g., acid rain exposure).

Cyclic Salt Spray Test (Pro-HESS or ASTM G85)

  • Alternates salt spray exposure and drying phases for more realistic conditions.

Waterproof Test

The rain and waterproof test verifies the resistance of materials, electronic devices, vehicles, garments, and structures to water exposure. This test ensures that a product remains functional and protected under rain, splashes, or immersion.

  1. vertical rain testThe sample is placed in a rain simulation chamber or exposed to water jets;
  2. Water is sprayed with different intensities, angles, and pressures to simulate various weather conditions;
  3. After the test, infiltration, electrical malfunctions, or material damage are analyzed.

Types of Waterproof Tests

Vertical Rain Test (IPX1-IPX2)

  • Simulates natural rain with vertical fall or slight tilt (15°), at an intensity of 1mm/min.

Water Spray Test (IPX3 - IPX4)

  • Verifies resistance to sprays and jets from different angles (up to 60° or full 360°).

High-Pressure Water Jet Test (IPX5 - IPX6)

  • Uses powerful jets to test water resistance in harsh environments or simulate splashes and waves (12–100 l/min flow).

Immersion Test (IPX7 - IPX8)

  • Tests waterproofing under immersion at depths of 1m or more for at least 30 minutes.

Test Objectives

Verify waterproofing of enclosures, seals, and sealed materials
Test protection of electronic devices against short circuits and moisture damage
Simulate extreme weather conditions to ensure product durability

Dust Resistance Test

The dust test evaluates the ability of electronic devices, mechanical components, and materials to resist penetration of dust and solid particles. It is essential for products used in desert, industrial, or dusty environments such as automotive, railway, military, construction, and outdoor equipment.

  1. The sample is placed in a dust chamber;
  2. Fine powders (e.g., talc, sand, or industrial particulates) are suspended in the air for a defined time;
  3. After testing, dust infiltration and product functionality are checked.

Types of Dust Tests

Fine Dust Tightness Test (IP5X)

  • Simulates exposure to fine dust (e.g., fine sand or talc) to verify infiltration resistance.

Total Dust Protection Test (IP6X)

  • Ensures complete sealing so that no particles can enter the product.

Test Objectives

  • Verify electronic devices’ protection against dust infiltration that could impair functionality
  • Test mechanical resistance of materials against wear from dust and sand
  • Ensure product safety and durability in extreme climates or industrial environments
